The Challenge (and Gift) in Getting Unstuck in Your Career

You can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking you used when you created them. These famous paraphrased words from Albert Einstein are the heart of what therapy, personal development, coaching, and neuroscience try to help us do to change our perspective to a healthier one.

If you’re feeling “stuck” in your career, you’re not going to get unstuck by:

1.    Doing nothing
2.    Doing the same things you’ve always done
3.    Hoping for things to change

Getting unstuck requires you to get out of what I refer to as your “default mode” of being and thinking into NEW ways of thinking and being that will feel VERY uncomfortable.

They’re uncomfortable because they’re foreign and unfamiliar to you.

It’s in this tension of the gap between the old and the new where change and transformation happen.

I see you. You’re a seasoned, purpose-driven woman, longing for more fulfillment and gratification from your career. You’re done with all the overachieving and overdoing and want to use your brilliance to truly make an impact.

Staying tethered to the role/job/career that is no longer bringing you joy and purpose is NOT the answer.

You MUST step out of your comfort zone into the unfamiliar territory of change—and that can look like a lot of things, depending on your context.

A couple of weeks ago, I’d been basking in the beauty of fall and took some pretty fabulous photos of the natural landscape all around me as an amateur photographer using my cellphone.

Fall demonstrates the beauty of change. Yes, there is the shedding, (and this week my front lawn is testimony to that). AND there is also the magnificent transformation of the leaves changing colors and creating a beauty that did not exist before. There is even beauty in the fallen leaves!

Perhaps you’ve been in your professional arena for a couple of decades, and there is a sense of urgency and restlessness for things to change.

Maybe you feel dissatisfied, stuck, unfulfilled, invisible…

You really need things to change but you have NO idea how to start.

As a first step, start with an intention and commitment to take small steps to rediscover your passions, strengths, and values so you can cue into your true calling.

This is one of the first things I address in the first chapter of my book, It’s Your Time to Shine Girl. because I see it as foundational. Without a clear sense of purpose, how can you be truly fulfilled?

Let the beauty of fall inspire and motivate you to face uncertainty courageously. Shedding the old is uncomfortable, and scary even, but there is also beauty and awe in the new thing that will be created.
