Sarah Mitchell and the Resurgence of InnovaTech

There was a tech startup called "InnovaTech," in the heart of Chicago, that was on the brink of failure. The company was facing intense competition, internal turmoil, and a lack of direction. In the midst of this chaos emerged a leader named Sarah Mitchell.

Sarah was a seasoned executive with a reputation for being fierce and uncompromising. She had a strong vision for InnovaTech and believed in its potential despite the gloomy outlook.

On her first day as CEO, she gathered the entire company in the cafeteria, and with unwavering confidence, she declared, "We're not here to play it safe. We're here to disrupt the industry and change the game. Failure is not an option."

Sarah immediately set to work, making bold decisions that ruffled feathers and challenged the status quo. She overhauled the company's product development process, cutting through layers of bureaucracy and red tape.

She introduced a culture of accountability, pushing employees to take ownership of their projects.

Her leadership style didn't always sit well with everyone. Some employees found her approach intimidating, and there were whispers of discontent in the office.

But Sarah didn't waver. She knew that to save InnovaTech, she needed to make tough choices, even if they were unpopular.

One of her boldest moves was to approach a major investor for additional funding. In a high-stakes meeting, she presented her vision for the company's future, refusing to sugarcoat the challenges they faced. She secured the much-needed investment, a move that astonished her skeptics and started to turn the company around.

Sarah's leadership wasn't just about making bold decisions though; it was also about leading by example. She was dedicated and committed to the company’s success and was passionate about her vision for the company. She inspired her team to step up their game.

Slowly but surely, InnovaTech began to thrive. Product innovation flourished, and the company's reputation in the industry improved.

Employees who had initially resisted Sarah's leadership found themselves drawn to her as their leader.

Sarah Mitchell's leadership had not only saved the company but had also turned it into a powerhouse in the tech industry. She proved that sometimes, what a struggling organization needs most is a leader who is willing to believe bigger, to fearlessly pursue a bold vision, and to stay the course steadfastly, despite the obstacles in its path.

This story is so inspiring. And guess what? It’s fiction! But I shared it with you to help you reflect on how you may have handled a similar situation when you were faced with a leadership challenge. What was your posture?

And I’m also curious about what YOU take away from this story ? What aspects of Sarah’s story stand out to you?  Do you relate to her courage, resilience, tenacity, confidence, or something else?

Leading Unapologetically

Here’s how I would summarize this style of leadership that Sarah personified—it's unapologetic leadership.

I believe leading unapologetically means embracing your authentic self and fearlessly stepping into your role as a leader. It means owning your strengths, weakness and unique perspectives without feeling the need to conform or apologize for who you are.

When you lead unapologetically, you are true to yourself and your vision. You don't let the judgments or expectations of others hold you back. Instead, you trust your intuition and make decisions that align with your values and purpose.

Leading like this requires self-awareness and a willingness to take risks. It means being vulnerable and transparent with your team, showing them that it's okay to make mistakes and learn from them. By owning your imperfections, you create an environment where others feel safe to do the same.

Leading unapologetically also means having the courage to challenge the status quo and push "structures" that no longer work. It involves standing up for what you believe in, even if it means facing criticism or resistance.

Let's be clear, leading unapologetically doesn't mean being arrogant or insensitive. It's about finding the balance between assertiveness and empathy, between confidence and humility. It's about recognizing and valuing the contributions of others while still taking charge when necessary.

By leading unapologetically, you set an example for your team and create a culture of authenticity and empowerment. You inspire others to embrace their own unique voices and perspectives, fostering innovation and growth within your organization.

The Unapologetic Posture IRL

The story I started with is fiction, but here are just a few examples of women (present and past) with this posture of leadership in their arena:

1. Indira Gandhi: As India's first female Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi was a fearless leader who made tough decisions during her time in office. She was unwavering in her pursuit of social and economic reforms, even during times of political turmoil.

2. Sheryl Sandberg: Facebook's COO, Sheryl Sandberg, is a vocal advocate for gender equality in the workplace. She authored the book "Lean In," (still a bestseller today!) which encourages women to pursue leadership roles without apology and advocates for breaking down gender biases.

3. Kamala Harris: As the Vice President of the United States, Kamala is a trailblazing leader who has shattered numerous glass ceilings. She's confident and steadfast in her commitment to justice, equality, and representation in politics. And remember that debate with Mike Pence when the fly sat on his head? Talk about an unapologetic posture!

4. Serena Williams: Tennis legend Serena Williams has been unapologetic about her determination and ambition to be one of the greatest athletes in the world. Now seen as the female GOAT in tennis, she has overcome obstacles and used her platform to advocate for gender equality in sports. And she’s inspired newly minted Coco Gauff who is now the youngest player to win the US Open since Serena in 1999!

5. Greta Thunberg: The young Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg is unapologetic in her calls for urgent action on climate change. She has inspired a global youth movement, holding leaders accountable for their environmental policies.

What about you? Where are you on the unapologetic spectrum of leadership?
